Week 2- Making money: Adsense, Affiliate Marketing, and Dropshipping

Adsense-

Adsense is Google’s way of helping you make money through advertisements on your website. It’s great, easy, and free to use. You don’t get money for having the ads on your website, but rather, you get money for the amount of times people click on the ads. You can also choose what kinds of advertisements you want and where they’re located on your web page.

REMEMBER: You cannot click on your own ads or ask anyone else to click on them. The only people who click on them should be the people who have an honest desire to learn more about or buy the product. You also cannot draw attention to your ads or advocate for them in any way. Make sure to read the terms and conditions before using Adsense.

Affiliate Marketing-

Affiliate marketing is another way to make money on a website. To do this, you will have a link for a product on your website. You don’t get money per click, but instead, you get a certain percentage of each sale. It might be good to have a link for something you’ve tested and know is a good product so that you can give your honest opinion about it.

Your website has to have value for consumers. If it doesn’t, you are considered a bridge page, and google doesn’t like those. You need to think about why a consumer would want to go to your website first instead of going straight to Amazon. An example of adding value would be putting together a list of reviewed products. In this situation, a consumer would want to go to your website first in order to gain more understanding about the best product to buy.

You might wonder if most people will take the information you give them, but then go buy the product later. It’s okay if they do because of COOKIES. The computer will track that they had gone to your website, and you will still be paid your portion as long as it’s within the stated amount of time.

PROS-

  • The other company has to deal with returns so you don’t have to
  • You don’t have to have inventory
  • You don’t have to deal with shipping
  • You can work with reputable companies like Amazon

CONS-

  • Not very profitable because of the low percentage you’re given

Dropshipping-

Dropshipping is one step above affiliate marketing and one step below retail. With dropshipping, you never buy supplies and inventory, and you never have to deal with shipping. Instead, you list a product for sale with an increased cost, and when a consumer buys it, you buy it from the supplier, keep the extra money, and the supplier deals with shipping it to the customer.

PROS-

  • You can determine the cost
  • You don’t have to deal with inventory
  • You don’t have to deal with shipping

CONS-

  • Returns are difficult to figure out. It might be cheaper just to pay them back with your own money than to send the product back to China
