Week 1- Starting a business

Business Models vs. Business ideas

What do I need to do first: choose a business model or a business idea? There’s no right or wrong answer. You can choose an idea that you’re passionate about and think of all of the business models that could work, or you could choose a business model you like and think of all of the ideas that could be used. The possibilities are endless.

Remember that not all business ideas and business models have been thought of yet. “The best business model hasn’t been invented yet” (Brother Lundin). Brainstorm about what still needs to be done, and especially about what has been invented but hasn’t moved onto the internet yet. Shopping used to be separate from the internet, and now it’s one of the main ways the internet is used.

Example: I want to make a blog, but I know that there are already a lot of recipe blogs. Maybe there’s a variation that hasn’t been created yet.

Using Google Ads

Google ads is a great way to jumpstart your business. If you don’t go this route, your website most likely will never be on the first search page. Pay while you have to, get popular, and then you won’t have to pay to be at the top anymore. Just make sure you put a budget in Google Ads so you don’t accidentally spend a fortune!

After making a google ads account, use keyword planner to see how popular a topic is on the web and what the competition is like.

Tip- go to Google Trends to see when things are most and least popular. (Change your location if it’s a local business)

Buying Supplies

When buying supplies, think of the criteria that matter most to you, and then weigh the pros and cons of each supplier. You might be tempted to go with a supplier that has a good website and doesn’t look sketchy. This is probably good, but remember that maybe they’re the manufacturers and they don’t need to do their business solely online. So don’t judge them off of first impressions. Another reason not to go with the best website: they’re probably a popular wholesaler that many people are buying from. This means that your product won’t be unique and you’ll have a lot of competition.

Tip- don’t buy cheap things, hoping you can fake a good brand name. People want quality. Sell them good quality and they’ll pay for the good quality. But if you try to go cheap later, you’ll ruin your brand’s reputation.
